Rhian is
a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Originally from
the Rhondda Valley in South Wales, she studied the harp with Ann
Griffith before she came to London. Under her dedicated tuition, Rhian has won
many prizes at the various cultural festivals held in Wales, as well as second
prize in the 1994 (under 19) Junior World Harp Contest in Cardiff. That same
year, Rhian took up her place on the undergraduate course at the Guildhall
School of Music and Drama.
In 1996, Rhian was invited to represent Wales at the Inter-Celtic Festival in
L’Orient, Brittany, Europe’s largest Celtic Festival, where she performed in an
open air spectacular in a stadium with 6000 spectators. Rhian went onto study
with Charlotte Seale and in 1997 she won prizes at the Bromley, Croydon and
Beckenham Festival. Another memorable moment for Rhian from that year was taking
part in a chamber music concert with members of the Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra. In 1998 Rhian won the Nansi Richards Scholarship and was runner-up to
the blue Ribbon Prize at the National Eisteddfod. As a member of the GSMD
Symphony Orchestra, Rhian participated in an exciting exchange project with the
Paris Conservatoire and the jazz legend George Russell with performances in
Paris and London.
Rhian gained a distinction for her postgraduate diploma at Trinity College and received a scholarship to study with the distinguished harper Sioned Williams, principal harpist to the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Rhian is a beneficiary of the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the Clothworker’s Foundation, the Grace Williams Memorial Trust and the Craxton Memorial Trust. Rhian made her lunchtime recital debut in 1999 at St David’s Hall, Cardiff and late in May, at St. Martin-in-the-Fields.
Since leaving Music College, Rhian has played with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and is associate harpist to the West End Musical, My Fair Lady at the National Theatre and Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.
Other exciting projects Rhian has been involved in, include a national tour of Lilac, a one man show in which she performed solo on stage with an actor, and a trip to Malta with Opera Parnassus to perform Britten’s Turn of the Screw.
As a member of Bergamot Ensemble, Rhian has performed at the Canterbury Festival and Brighton Festival (Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro). Rhian has performed with various orchestras at the Barbican Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, St John Smith’s Square, Birmingham Symphony Hall and The Lindbury Studio Theatre. She also plays as part of a flute and harp duo. Rhian is the resident musician at the Sofitel Hotel, St James, London and also has vast experience performing at weddings, functions and livery dinners.
